Traineeships & Apprenticeships - NSW & QLD

Traineeships and Apprenticeship programs are an excellent way for someone to commence an early childhood career. Traineeship programs gives educators an opportunity to pass on their knowledge and skills to a person that is new to the sector. The Australian government also provides financial incentives to assist with the cost of employing a trainee. All ECTARC traineeship and apprenticeship programs can be commenced at any time of the year.

NSW Traineeships - a quick overview

  • Owners/Directors contact their local Australian Apprenticeship Centre - Find your local centre at www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au to discuss the requirements of taking on a trainee and information on the financial incentives available.
  • Owner/Directors employ a trainee.

  • An ECTARC Training and Development Officer visits the centre to sign up a trainee, explain the training plan and provide learning materials.

  • Training takes place both on and off the job. Trainees are issued with learning materials that provide them with all the information they require for self study. Employers give trainees time off the floor each week to complete learning materials. A qualified Child Care Worker/Teacher from the service takes on the role as the trainee's Workplace Supervisor. The Workplace Supervisor provides support and advice to the trainee throughout the program.

  • ECTARC provides support to the trainee and employer through contact visits to the centre throughout the traineeship and via regular telephone communications. Every three months a progression letter is sent to the Director to clearly communicate how the trainee or apprentice is progressing with their studies.

NSW Training Fee - paid by the trainee

The NSW government has advised that from 1 January 2007 trainees are required to pay an annual upfront fee for each year of their traineeship course and have instructed Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to collect the fee - please contact ECTARC for details. Part time trainees will be required to pay the training fee for each year of training. Some trainees will be exempt, including existing worker trainees, school based trainees, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and those receiving an identified benefit.Contact ECTARC or your Australian Apprenticeship centre for further details.
